Barack Obama's Statement on Law Day

Statement

Date: May 1, 2007
Issues: Legal

On May 1, we celebrate "Law Day," and honor America's heritage as a nation where everyone is equal before the law and no one is above it -- a heritage that has served as a beacon to nations and peoples across the world. But from the firings of U.S. attorneys to the erosion of legal protections at Guantanamo, recent practices have called into question this administration's commitment to the principle of equal justice for all. And so today, let's all remember that, in the words of then-Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, "our liberties depend upon our respect for the law."
