Ros-Lehtinen Co-Sponsors Legislation That Seeks To Reauthorize Health Centers For Low Income Families

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, senior member of the Florida Congressional Delegation, co-sponsored H.R. 1343, the Health Centers Renewal Act which seeks to re-authorize community health centers for low income and uninsured families. The legislation was introduced by Congressmen Gene Green and Chip Pickering.

The bill calls for the reauthorization of the Health Centers Program for five years and will thus authorize appropriations for 2008 through 2012 for the health centers to be able to meet the health care needs of low income families and those that are uninsured. These health centers provide care to 1 of every 8 uninsured Americans, 1 of every 4 American in poverty and 1 of every 9 rural Americans.

Said Ros-Lehtinen, "I am pleased to be co-sponsoring this bill because too many Americans cannot afford event the most basic health care. The safety net that these clinics provide cannot be underestimated because they are the sole resource for persons who cannot afford adequate healthcare. Extending this reauthorization will continue the good work that has been accomplished and it will continue to alleviate the suffering of many. I urge my colleagues to co-sponsor this important piece of legislation."
