Kerry: I doubt ICE has any real idea about who it's detaining
Senator John Kerry today issued the following statement on New Bedford parents detained in Texas who, despite assurances from officials, still haven't been reunited with their children.
"Every day this story gets worse. When I spoke to Secretary Chertoff last Thursday night, he assured me that no parents were being detained in Texas. Now we learn of the discovery of nineteen sole or primary caretakers of children, one minor child, and one woman suffering from cancer at the Texas detention facility. It is unacceptable that these people were flown half way across the country before this information was discovered.
"I have serious doubts as to whether ICE has any real idea about who they are detaining and where. I am just grateful that they eventually granted the Massachusetts Department of Social Services access to the Texas facility.
"Every effort must be made to reunify these families immediately. As Mayor Lang has requested, all immigrants should be returned to New Bedford to make this happen. After a week of disastrous decisions and poor planning, the Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement needs to do something to help the families that have been ripped apart."
