Governors Celebrate EntrepreneurshipWeek USA

Recognize Kauffman Foundation for Support of Innovation America Initiative

The nation's governors voiced their support for EntrepreneurshipWeek USA from Washington, D.C., where they are gathered for the innovation-focused NGA Winter Meeting.

Sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation and supported by more than 1,400 partner organizations, including NGA-EntrepreneurshipWeek USA aims to stimulate greater numbers of youth to pursue careers as innovative entrepreneurs. The effort is designed to celebrate the creativity, imagination and innovation of entrepreneurship in all its forms-including business start-ups, social entrepreneurship and enterprising employees within existing organizations.

At the centerpiece of the week, partner organizations in all 50 states and nearly every major city in the country will host activities to inspire America's next generation of entrepreneurs. In a January letter to governors, NGA Chair Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and Vice Chair Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty encouraged their colleagues to participate in the effort.

"The goals of EntrepreneurshipWeek USA are an outstanding complement to my NGA Chair's initiative, Innovation America," said Gov. Napolitano. "This is a great opportunity for governors and community, education and business leaders across the country to help inspire young people to explore their potential as self-starters and entrepreneurs."

"Entrepreneurship is a driving force in the U.S. economy," said Gov. Pawlenty. "Through EntrepreneurshipWeek and the Innovation America initiative, governors are taking a fresh look at how we can encourage youth to pursue math and science studies to ensure they graduate with the academic foundation necessary to succeed in any environment."

"I am grateful for the support the nation's governors have provided for EntrepreneurshipWeek USA," said Carl Schramm, president and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation. "Educating our young people about entrepreneurship and reinforcing the value that innovators bring to our economy is critical to America's long-term prosperity."
