Holt: Majority Sign-Up Fair, Legal, Beneficial

Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12), a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, today released the following statement on the Committee's passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation that would allow for union certification through the majority sign-up procedure. It would also provide a process for the bargaining of an initial agreement and prescribe new penalties for certain unfair practices.

"Unionization is not a zero-sum game where if labor benefits, corporations lose, or vice versa. The right to organize is fundamental for the ability of working people to protect their compensation, benefits, and working conditions. Ensuring recognition of majority sign-up as a legal way to form a union will help remove obstacles that employees seeking to organize often face. Protecting the right to organize is a benefit to society at large as working families gain the essential security and peace of mind associated with the ability to bargain collectively on workplace issues."

"I commend Chairman George Miller for his leadership on this issue and I urge the Senate to move quickly to help employees exercise their Constitutional right."
