Tonight: Bush Expected To Propose 40% Cut To City's Public Hospitals In State Of The Union

According to news reports, President Bush is expected to propose cutting Medicaid payments to public hospitals in tonight's State of the Union address, with 40% of the cuts coming at the expense of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn & Queens), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and a member of the Health subcommittee, reacted to the news in advance of the President's speech, calling the proposal "dead on arrival."

"President Bush is proposing to take a scalpel to the most important healthcare funding stream that New York has," said Rep. Weiner. "New York needs more Medicaid dollars, not less"

"These harmful Medicaid cuts will be dead on arrival."

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, on which Rep. Weiner sits, has primary jurisdiction over Medicaid funding.
