Statement of Congressman Leonard Boswell on the State of the Union Address
"For six years the President ignored Congressional Democrats. While he can claim some success in passing his agenda, his partisan approach resulted in a resounding defeat for his party in 2006. Tonight, I welcome his overtures of bipartisanship and remain hopeful he will reach out to us now. It is time for us to work together."
"While I applaud the President's call to cut gasoline consumption and expand the use of ethanol and other alternatives, I question his commitment. The Administration's record on promoting cleaner, alternative fuels is weak."
"The lack of health insurance coverage is a tremendous problem in this country. The President's plan seems a bit confusing and punitive. We need to find practical and bipartisan solutions to solve this immense problem."
"Finally, I heard no plan to bring the troops home from Iraq. I personally have tremendous support for our military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan; however, we cannot continue down this road. We need a workable strategy to bring the troops home."
