Levin Statement on the Passing of President Gerald R. Ford

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., made this statement following the death of President Gerald R. Ford:

"Gerald Ford came to be president at a time of turmoil, when we needed a healer who would unify this nation. He rose to the occasion, and for that indispensable service, Gerald Ford will always have the gratitude and reverence of the American people.

"Most Americans will remember President Ford for his calm and steady leadership that ended one of the most serious domestic crises in our history. But we in Michigan hold Jerry Ford in affection and esteem for his lifetime of service, including 13 terms in the House of Representatives. We take particular pride in this son of Michigan and the manner in which he always treasured his West Michigan roots.

"Gerald Ford was deeply respected on both sides of the political aisle for his fairness, his bipartisanship, and his integrity. He helped smooth out the rough edges of politics. Over time, we will honor his memory in many ways, but one immediate way is to return the Gerald Ford quality of civility to the nation's capital.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife Betty and his family as we celebrate the life and legacy of Gerald Ford."
