Hodes Statement on Bush's Escalation of Iraq War

Congressman Paul Hodes released the following statement this afternoon in anticipation of President Bush's announcement that he will escalate American involvement in Iraq.

"What we're going to hear from the President tonight is a plan for too little, too late. An additional 20,000 troops is not enough to secure Baghdad, and an escalation on that scale would only put more Americans in harm's way. The President is being forced to acknowledge his many mistakes in Iraq, and he wants us to think that this troop increase represents a change in direction; in fact, it's just more of the same.

"There is no reason to believe this will accomplish anything productive. Instead of escalation, we need a responsible exit strategy to get our troops out of harm's way. We can't afford another dose of President Bush's catastrophic Iraq policy."
