Governor's office adopts military unit for the holidays

Governor Kathleen Sebelius and her staff have adopted a military unit for the holidays. The 15th Sustainment Brigade, Bravo Company, has been stationed in Al Taji, Iraq since August 6th as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Bravo Company consists of 60 soldiers and they have requested everything from toothpaste to coffee pots, fruit snacks to bed sheets. A detailed list went out to the Governor's staff shortly after Thanksgiving and items will be sent to the unit in late December.

The list was provided by 1st Sergeant Robert E. Knight Jr., who is a graduate of the Washburn Rural school system. To assist the Governor's staff in collecting and packing the items, students from Washburn Rural Middle School will visit the Governor's office on December 20th at 2:45 p.m. They will meet the Governor and assist with getting the packages ready to go.

"The American men and women serving overseas make a tremendous personal sacrifice for the pursuit of peace and security throughout the Middle East. As we gather with our loved ones in the safety of our homes, we must remember our soldiers' and their families' sacrifices." Sebelius said. "The men and women of the United States Military give us the most incredible gift each and everyday, and this small gesture is but one of the many ways we can say ‘thank you'."

"I think this is great," Washburn Rural Middle School Principal, Jerry Meier said. "Our students have always been big on volunteerism and civic engagement; and now, helping to bring the holidays to our soldiers and a former WRM Falcon is really special."
Items are being collected in the Governor's office, 212-S on the second floor of the State Capitol in Topeka.
