Gov. Minner Meets with Auto Manufacturer Executives in Detroit

Governor Ruth Ann Minner led a meeting yesterday with Delaware's Congressional delegation and Thomas LaSorda, president and CEO of Daimler Chrysler's Chrysler Group, and Frank Ewasyshyn, executive vice president of manufacturing for the Chrysler group to discuss the future of the company's auto plant in Newark.

"We met our goals for the meeting in demonstrating our understanding of the company's business issues and offered our unwavering commitment to the Newark plant as they work on their restructuring plan," Gov. Minner said.

Daimler Chrysler officials are undergoing a company-wide cost-cutting initiative and have said that a final decision on the future of the Newark plant has not yet been reached. Delaware officials will continue to work with the company in an effort to keep the Newark plant open.

While in Detroit, Gov. Minner also met with executive leaders of the international United Auto Workers union and discussed with them the value of their presence on the East coast. The Governor also met today with executives from General Motors to talk about increased production at GM's Boxwood plant.

Gov. Minner also had a chance to enjoy the auto show while she was in Michigan and was impressed with several of the new vehicles being showcased, especially those with environmentally friendly designs.
