Barrett Votes Against Giving the UN Authority over a critical national security program
Congressman Gresham Barrett (SC, 3) released the following statement after a motion he supported to eliminate a harmful provision in H.R. 1 was defeated. The ill-advised provision, which remained in the bill, would place a critical national security program, the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), under the purview of the United Nations.
"The 9/11 Commission recognized the PSI as an effective program. Their suggestion was to expand it, not place it under the jurisdiction of the United Nations," said Barrett.
"America is a sovereign nation. The American people do not want the U.S. government seeking permission from foreign countries in order to implement aspects of our national security program," said Barrett. "PSI is an important tool in preventing another terrorist attack here at home. Placing a program like this one, critical to our national security, under the purview of the United Nations is irresponsible."
The 9/11 Commission issued 41 recommendations for protecting our nation from future terrorist attacks, the Republican-led House passed 39 of those recommendations.
