Alexander Says U.S.-India Nuclear Deal Strengthens partnership Between Two Countries

ALEXANDER SAYS U.S.-INDIA NUCLEAR DEAL STRENGTHENS PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) released the following statement today after President George W. Bush signed into law the Henry J. Hyde United States-India Peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act of 2006 (H.R. 5682):

"In this new century, there may be no more important two-country relationship than the one between the United States and India. The legislation signed today puts us on a path to a strategic partnership between the U.S. and India that will be a pillar of American foreign policy for generations to come," Alexander said. "Nuclear power development is good for India and good for the United States as we work to ensure an adequate power supply while limiting emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants worldwide."

The bill will implement agreements struck in 2005 and earlier this year by President Bush and the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh allowing the U.S. to engage in nuclear cooperation with India while safeguarding U.S. national security and nonproliferation efforts. Alexander was a co-sponsor of the Senate legislation to implement the agreement.
