JONES INTRODUCES RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART

Yesterday, Third District Congressman Walter B. Jones introduced H. Con. Res. 49, a resolution recognizing the 75th anniversary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and commending recipients of the Purple Heart for their courageous demonstrations of gallantry and heroism on behalf of the United States.

"This resolution calls on Americans to congratulate the Military Order of the Purple Heart on reaching this great milestone, commends all recipients of this tremendous honor and encourages all Americans to take time to learn what the symbol of the Purple Heart represents," Jones said.

The organization known as the Military Order of the Purple Heart was formed on October 19, 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of members of the Armed Forces who have received the Purple Heart. The Purple Heart was originally conceived 225 years ago, on August 7, 1782, as the Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington.

The Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to members of the Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war wielded by the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of members who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. More than 500,000 recipients of the Purple Heart are still living today.

"The symbol of the Purple Heart is one that resonates with so many of our nation's veterans and military families. It is so much more than just a recognition of service," Jones said. "With this year's 75th anniversary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the nation's only veterans' service organization comprised strictly of combat veterans, it's fitting that we recognize their work to promote and sustain the spirit of the Purple Heart."

"It is my privilege to honor this great American organization with H. Con. Res. 49," Jones said. "The members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart are true heroes who have shed blood and put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms we hold dear. Without their courage and sacrifice, our nation would not be the great land of opportunity that it is today."
