Statement from Governor Tom Vilsack
Governor Tom Vilsack today issued the following statement regarding Senator Tom Harkin's naming as Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
"I would like to congratulate Senator Tom Harkin for being named Chair of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee for the 110th Congress. He has long been a national leader, and all Iowans thank him for his service and advocacy on behalf of our agricultural community.
Having served as chair of this same committee during the 108th Congress, Senator Harkin ushered in the 2002 Farm Bill, which promoted renewable fuel growth and rural development in our state. Thanks in part to his leadership, Iowa's bio-economy has grown along with income for our farmers. I know that as he crafts a new farm bill next session, he will continue to fight for an expanded bio-economy, our rural communities, and the farmers that are the backbone of our state.
I would also like to thank Senator Harkin for his work to enhance the country's conservation efforts and protect our environment. As a result of his hard work, we have improved our environment by preserving our soil and making our waterways cleaner.
On a personal note, over the last eight years I have had the pleasure of working with Senator Harkin on several issues and each time I saw his passion and dedication for the people of this state. He is an outstanding public servant, and I look forward to his continued leadership on behalf of the people of Iowa."
