CUMMINS ANNOUNCES 600-800 NEW JOBS AT COLUMBUS PLANT

U.S. Congressman Mike Pence made the following remarks at Cummins' Columbus Engine Plant on October 11, 2006 during an announcement that Cummins is expanding its production facility in order to produce a new family of light-duty, clean-diesel engines. The company is expected to create 600-800 new jobs as a result of the announcement.

"For generations, for thousands of Hoosier families, Cummins is Columbus. This company, like its admired founder, the late J. Irwin Miller, always believed in this community and this state and demonstrated that commitment through acts of enterprise and philanthropy to the betterment of the families of this region.

"And since its founding, Cummins has said yes to Columbus and Indiana and today Cummins says yes to Indiana again. Yes to the hardworking people of South Central Indiana. Yes to the values of community, hard work, dependability and integrity that characterize the heartland.

"I must admit that when I heard that Cummins was closing the Columbus Heavy Duty Assembly plant and consolidating all heavy-duty operations into the Jamestown Engine Plant in New York in 2002, I was troubled and concerned. But now I may confide, that shortly after that announcement, Cummins officials came to meet with this Columbus native in Washington and assured me that they remained committed to keeping this global company and growing good-paying jobs right here in Indiana.

"And Cummins kept its word. Not that that should surprise anyone who knew its founder or knows this unique company. The Cummins brand is all about dependability and doing what they say they will do. The world marketplace knows this and Indiana has known it all along.

"So I rise today on behalf of my colleagues in Congress and my hometown to say thanks. Thank you Cummins for keeping your word. Thank you Cummins for saying yes to Columbus again."
