TRAUNER TOUTS KEEPING PUBLIC LANDS AND ACCESS - 6/16/2006
Rock Springs/Cheyenne - Candidate for US House Gary Trauner said there has been a growing movement to put our public lands on the auction block to pay for this congress' inability to control spending and get our country's financial affairs in order. "No Wyoming family would sell their furniture to make their mortgage payment and they don't want their public lands sold to pay off the country's debt," Trauner said at press conferences in Rock Springs and Cheyenne today. People across Wyoming say that access to our public lands is very important to them. Enjoying our public lands is at the heart of what it means to be a Wyomingite, according to Trauner.
"Most folks understand that with some common sense and an open mind, we can have responsible development of our public lands, while ensuring that conservation of special places and recreational opportunities for all can be accomplished," Trauner said, "Achieving a reasonable balance takes clear thinking, the ability to work with a wide range of people and strong leadership - and that's what I offer," Trauner added.
Wyoming's current Representative has had 12 years to show leadership in this area, but she stood up for mining companies and developers wanting to rewrite the 1872 Mining Law to benefit themselves at the expense of the people of Wyoming, Trauner noted. Regardless of the excuse, she allowed Wyoming to go unrepresented in Congress in the most critical time of the Martin's Cove sale/lease of public lands, and Wyoming recently heard "I signed, no I didn't" as an excuse over the sale of public lands to pay off our debt, Trauner added. Wyoming needs and deserves better leadership in Congress according to Trauner.
Trauner said he will provide leadership on Public Lands - looking at and listening to all parties, weighing our short term needs against long term effects, and negotiating for balance and common sense solutions. "I promise every person in the State of Wyoming -whether it is a bill to sell Public Lands or any other legislation - I will never be confused on what I have signed and when I have signed it," Trauner concluded.
