Gingrey votes to bring terrorists to justice

U.S. Congressman Phil Gingrey today voted to pass H.R. 6166, the Military Commissions Act, legislation that will allow our military to try terrorists for their crimes.

"We are in a war for the future of civilization, and military commissions provide the best way for us to bring brutal terrorists to justice and prevent future attacks on our citizens," said Gingrey. "The legislation we passed today, while not perfect, accomplishes our most pressing goal of bringing terrorists to trial without handing over classified intelligence information to our enemies."

"H.R. 6166 will preserve the basic rights of terrorist defendants by providing them with counsel and a fair trial," Gingrey continued. "Above and beyond that, I don't believe we owe them much more. By fighting out of uniform, targeting civilians and beheading their prisoners, these terrorists have shown their disregard for the Geneva code and, moreover, for human life. If tough, aggressive interrogation techniques that fall short of torture are necessary to extract the information we need to prevent future attacks, we should absolutely preserve those techniques."

Gingrey concluded, "We can not hesitate to give our government the tools it needs to protect our homeland and prevent another September 11th."

The Military Commissions Act fully conforms to Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, as well as all applicable U.S. laws and international treaty obligations.
