Wynn Opposes Administration's Flawed Trade Policy

Tonight, Congressman Wynn voted against HR 5602, which gives President Bush the authority to proclaim permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) with Vietnam. Wynn opposed the measure because current trade policy has been harmful to US workers and the economy. Fortunately, the House rejected the measure.

"Since Congress authorized PNTR with China in 2000, the US trade deficit with China ballooned to a record-breaking $202 billion, and our economy has lost more than three million manufacturing jobs. Congress cannot sit idly by and pass trade agreements that hurt American families," says Wynn.

Wages for Vietnamese workers are extremely low relative to U.S. workers. According to the State Department, the minimum wage for the state sector is $22.15 a month, which translated into less than 80 cents a day. Vietnam PNTR will provide multinational companies with another way to close shop in the U.S. and relocate to where wages are low and workers have no voice.
