Sinagra, 59, countered that taking U.S. forces out of Iraq now or announcing a deadline for doing so would be a mistake.

"Regardless of how we got involved (in Iraq), we're there," Sinagra said. "To leave now, I believe, would create more bloodshed. I do believe we should train the Iraqi security forces to protect their new form of government, but I don't believe we should set a time frame.

"By setting a time frame, we would telegraph the insurgents of what our plans are ... and I think it could be disastrous," said Sinagra, an Air Force veteran who lives in Helmetta, Middlesex County, where he served on the borough council from 1990 through 1999.

Sinagra, who, like Holt, is married and a father, owns his own business -- My Plumber Inc., where he is CEO -- and also works as facilities manager for high-end appliance manufacturer Miele Inc. in South Brunswick.

Sinagra said across-the-board federal income tax cuts favored by Bush and the Republican majorities in the Senate and House have strengthened the economy and will continue doing so.

"We need to keep these tax cuts. It's going to be at least another five years before we can see the full effects of the tax cut," he said.

Holt, on the other hand, doesn't see it that way.
