Pelosi: ‘Democrats' New Direction Would Strengthen the Medicare Prescription Drug Program'

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Bush's claim that making any changes to the flawed Medicare prescription drug plan would weaken the program:

"Hundreds of thousands of seniors and people with disabilities are falling into the ‘Donut Hole,' where they continue to pay Medicare premiums without receiving any benefits.

"As pharmaceutical companies reap record profits, it's clear the President's flawed prescription drug plan is working better for drug companies than it is for America's seniors. It is no wonder that the Republican prescription drug bill actually bars Medicare from negotiating lower drug prices for seniors.

"Democrats' new direction would strengthen the Medicare prescription drug program by negotiating for lower drug prices for seniors."
