CONGRESSMAN DAVIS TO EDUCATE CONSUMERS ON PERILS OF PREDATORY MORTGAGE LENDERS

Recent reports from the federal government and non-profit fair housing organizations indicate that people in Birmingham have a higher likelihood of being victims of unfair mortgage lending practices than in many other cities across the nation. U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) is scheduled to host an event to educate the people of the 7th District about the perils of unscrupulous home mortgage lenders.

The Fair Home Lending Education Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Birmingham City Hall City Council Chambers. During this mid-day panel discussion, participants will hear representatives from various organizations outline how individuals should protect themselves from lenders who do not represent their best interest.

Whether you are buying your first home or considering re-financing your current home, this is an event that should not be missed. Statistics show that ethnic minorities, women and seniors are most often the targets of misinformation that can cost them thousands of dollars over the life of a loan. Our scheduled panelists will be able to speak to each of these groups.

Representatives from The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, AARP, The Center for Responsible Lending, The Fair Housing Center of Northern Alabama, and New South Federal Savings are scheduled to be on hand to offer information on how consumers can best protect themselves through knowledge and preparation.
