Hunter Votes to Protect Elections from Voter Fraud

Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) voted in favor of legislation today that helps prevent voter fraud and preserves the integrity of the election process. H.R. 4884 (Hyde-IL), the Federal Election Integrity Act, passed the House by a vote of 228-196.

"The right to vote is a pillar of our democracy and remains one of the most protected rights granted to the American people under the U.S. Constitution," said Congressman Hunter. "Our election process is intended to serve and represent the interests of the American people. Allowing those who are not citizens of this country to participate in this process diminishes its significance, both as a method of expression and a tool to affect change. This isn't what America is about, nor is it what our founding fathers intended."

H.R. 4884 requires that by 2008, voters present photo identification before voting in federal elections. By 2010, voters must present photo identification that certifies U.S. citizenship. For those who are unable to obtain or afford the appropriate form of identification, H.R. 4884 requires states provide the necessary identification and therefore authorizes funds to reimburse states for the costs associated with this effort.

H.R. 4884 has been referred to the U.S. Senate for further consideration.
