Anemic Jobs Number Underscores Troubling Economic Signs
JEC's senior House Democrat reacts

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Labor announced this morning that a mere 51,000 jobs were added in September, far below both forecasts and the 140,000 to 150,000 jobs needed every month just to keep up with the expanding workforce. This marks the fewest jobs created during any month in almost a year, and it adds to the raft of economic indicators showing that the economic recovery has not benefitted working Americans and the middle class.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), the senior House Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee, reacted to the disappointing news:

"This anemic jobs number underscores the anemic economy for American workers, who deserve better. Since president Bush took office, just about every economic indicator has gone in the wrong direction for American workers and the middle class. Job growth has been the worst under any president since Herbert Hoover. Real wages are down. Gas prices are up almost a full dollar. The budget deficit has ballooned, and the trade deficit is hitting new record highs every year.

"When the president talks about an economic recovery, he's mainly talking about corporate profits, not the middle class. American workers see limited job opportunities and declining wages and probably wonder why they are still getting squeezed."
