Pearce Introduces CLEAN TOWN Act to help New Mexico Parents and Teachers Fight Meth Crisis
Legislation would creates registry of convicted drug dealers; arose from suggestions 2nd District lawmaker received during August methamphetamine awareness tour

Washington, D.C., Sep 22 -

U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce announced today that he has introduced sweeping anti-drug legislation that would provide New Mexico's parents and teachers fight the methamphetamine crisis that is endangering our children's future.

H.R. 6165, the CLEAN TOWN Act of 2006 ("Communities Leading Everyone Away from Narcotics Through Online Warning Notification") creates a nationwide online registry of convicted illegal drug dealers and manufacturers, which would be accessible by the public as well as federal, state, and local law enforcement. This registry will list the residential address and zip code of such individuals.

"During our methamphetamine awareness tour across the 2nd District in August, I heard repeatedly that we should treat convicted drug dealers like we do convicted sex offenders," Rep. Pearce said. "Both have the capacity to violate our children and destroy their lives.

"Our communities need more tools to protect our children. In particular, parents and teachers have a right to know when someone who could poison their son or daughter lives in their neighborhood."
