FITZPATRICK PROVIDES LOCAL IRAQ VETS TO TELL THEIR SIDE OF IRAQ STORY
Posted on 07-10-2006

NEWTOWN, PA—A group of returning veterans from Iraq joined Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick today to describe Pat Murphy's plan for Iraq as misguided and dangerous for the Middle East and security at home.

"Pat Murphy has been traveling the district shopping his plan to withdraw American forces from Iraq next year," Fitzpatrick said, of his Democratic opponent. "However, what he fails to mention is what could happen if his plan were actually put into effect. He completely ignores the consequences of his plan."

The news conference was held this morning at American Legion Post 440 in Newtown.

Fitzpatrick said although Murphy's new plan recognizes that his original deadline is dangerous to our security, it still contains a fatal flaw - it provides a date certain for our troops to leave Iraq and does not touch on what will be left behind.

"Murphy fails to realize what I believe to be a critical flaw in the withdrawal debate - If we leave Iraq before the Iraqi government, the Iraq people and the Iraqi security forces are ready, the country could fall into complete civil war or worse," Fitzpatrick said.

"I believe that a withdrawal date rooted in domestic politics rather than conditions on the ground would invite enemies of the West to enter that country and use it as a base of operations for terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda," the Congressman said.

"That's why I gathered a group of Iraq veterans today to give them a forum to tell the people of the 8 th district the dangers of setting a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq as my opponent has done," Fitzpatrick said.

"Pat Murphy has made the Iraq War the focus of his campaign, while towing his party's line. The veterans who joined me today shared many of the same experiences as Pat Murphy and our other troops in Iraq. They saw the conditions on the ground and carried out a clear and defined mission. Today they told the voters of the 8 th district the other side of the story."
