FITZPATRICK TAKES STAND ON ENVIRONMENT
Posted on 02-10-2006

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick signed PennEnvironment's "New Energy Future Pledge," which calls on Congressional candidates to support policies to preserve the environment, lower dependence on oil and save energy for America's future.

The Philadelphia-based PennEnvironment called upon leaders to support policies that promote environmental stewardship and alternative energy. Some of the specific policies are:

* Reducing our dependence on oil by saving one-third of the oil we use today by 2025 (7 million barrels a day);
* Harness clean, renewable, homegrown energy sources like wind, solar and farm based bio-fuels;
* Save energy with high performance homes, buildings and appliances so that by 2025 we use 10 percent less energy than we do today;
* Invest in a New Energy Future by committing $30 billion over the next 10 years to the New Energy for America Initiative.

Fitzpatrick said, "PennEnvironment is a leader in confronting the problems we face as a nation in protecting our environment. Over the course of my first term in Congress, I worked closely with PennEnvironment to achieve many of its goals. This pledge makes complete sense and I am proud to put my name to it."

Congressman Fitzpatrick said his record speaks for itself. "I voted against opening the Artic National Wildlife Preserve to drilling because it offered no solution to our reliance on foreign oil. And I voted against opening the Outer Continental Shelf to drilling and also proposed an increase in vehicle gas efficiency standards.

"We need to end our dangerous addiction to foreign oil. This must be done by promotingalternative and renewable fuels and by funding emerging technologies that create new fuels for a new century."

"I look forward to promoting the policies set forth in this pledge in Congress - and I pledge to continue my role as a leader for environmental issues in my next term," Fitzpatrick said.
