Hoyer: Maryland Democrats Poised for Victory in November
Says Cardin Will Be a Great Senator Who Makes Marylanders Proud

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville) today released the following statement in response to the results of Maryland's primary election:

"Maryland Democrats today turned out to demand a new direction for our state and our nation.

"I am confident that our ticket is poised for victory in November.

"I supported Ben Cardin from the very beginning because I knew he would be a great Senator who would make Marylanders proud.

"No one has worked harder on behalf of his constituents over the last four decades than Ben has. And no one will fight harder for our common principles - fairness, equality and opportunity - than Ben will.

"Ben Cardin is a man with tremendous leadership abilities, legislative skills, and the highest integrity. He will stand up to President Bush and fight for the interests of hard working Maryland families.

"Kweisi Mfume ran an admirable race and effectively shined the light on the failed Bush-Ehrlich-Steele agenda.

"There is no question that he is a role model for many, overcoming difficult circumstances through intelligence and will. Kweisi is a friend and an effective public servant, and I look forward to working with him to ensure that all of our nominees are victorious in November."

"I would also like to express my sincere congratulations to Mayor Martin O'Malley, Delegate Anthony Brown, Peter Franchot, and Doug Gansler.

"We are blessed with an experienced, diverse, and talented ticket that will work for all Maryland families when elected in November.
