Bishop Meets With Local Cancer Research Advocates

Long Islanders Petitioned Congress for Research Funding

Washington, DC — Congressman Tim Bishop met yesterday in the nation's capital with local residents to discuss the urgent need for Congress to provide more funding for cancer research. The Long Islanders traveled to Washington on behalf of the American Cancer Society to also thank Bishop for being one of the first New Yorkers in Congress to sign the "Congressional Cancer Promise," which is a pledge to support additional funding for research. The local advocates presented Congressman Bishop with a plaque commemorating their visit.

"Like too many Long Islanders, breast cancer has attacked my family," Bishop said, "I am pleased that I can meet with Long Islanders who share my goal for more research funding and legislation that will help us move closer toward a cure for this disease." Bishop said.

Since his first election to the U.S. House, Congressman Bishop has been a leading supporter of funding for cancer research. One of Bishop's first official acts was to establish a Breast Cancer Advisory Board that has raised awareness about the link between breast cancer and environmental factors on Long Island and hosted community workshops.
