STATEMENT FROM DEVAL PATRICK ON THE TUNNEL TRAGEDY, PATRICK RE-ISSUES EARLIER CALL FOR NEW, INDEPENDENT "SPECIAL INSPECTOR GENERAL"

The following is a statement from Deval Patrick. In early May, Patrick said that as governor he would appoint an independent, "Special Inspector General" (SIG) with broad authority and powers to assume oversight of the Big Dig.

"First of all, I extend my deepest sympathy to the Delvalle family whose lives have been turned upside down by this horrible tragedy.

"Last night's ceiling collapse is the latest in a series of consequences of the failed leadership of the Big Dig. I said earlier this year that the existing oversight structure is clearly not working and my view has not changed. I am calling again for appointment of an independent, "Special Inspector General" with the power to review every aspect of this project and to lead an investigation of last night's incident and others wherever it may lead.

"New, independent leadership is the only way to help restore the public's confidence in the project. None of our current political leadership has managed to get the job done."
