Speaker Hastert Comments from Terrorist Tribunal Enrollment Ceremony

Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) today issued the following remarks at the enrollment ceremony for H.R. 6166, the Military Commissions Act of 2006.

"The last two years have seen America grow safer, stronger, and more prosperous as Congress has met one critical national need after another. Our economy continues to roar, with the stock market reaching near record levels, historic low unemployment, and millions of new jobs.

"The war against terror has been given incalculable support thanks to the recent enactment of legislation to clarify America's authority to hold and try enemy terrorists. We have begun the process of securing our national borders and bringing our immigration system back under control, with three major border security bills passed in recent weeks.

"Medicare Part D is already driving down prescription drug prices and helping millions of seniors. Meanwhile, gas prices continue to fall, relieving undue pressure on family budgets. Republican congressional policies are working, period.

"Jobs are being created, and new investments are pouring into our economy. As we continue to help win the war abroad, protect our borders and homeland, and make positive reforms here at home, we have not lost sight of the ever-present fact that much more must be done.

"Gas prices are falling, but we still must prepare for the next spike. Jobs and opportunities are being created, but we still must prepare for the next economic road bump. We are winning the war on terror, but we must not fall into a sense of false security.

"The nation and the world still need the Congress to lead, and Republicans are meeting that need every day."
