DEWINE STATEMENT ON 9/11 ANNIVERSARY

Today is a day that needs no introduction. Every American remembers exactly where they were two years ago when they first learned that terrorists attacked us here at home.

We will never forget those who we lost that day in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the fields of Pennsylvania, as well as those we have lost in Afghanistan and Iraq. We, as a Nation, will carry their memories with us as we work to ensure that they did not die in vain. We are a nation of action at every level and from the servicemen and women fighting abroad for our security to the work of the new Department of Homeland Security, we are re-building from the ground up.

For the past two years, I have used my positions on the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary Committees to get answers to questions about how this tragic event could happen and what can and will be done to reform failings in our Nation's intelligence community. The joint House-Senate Intelligence Committee investigation report released this year documented the numerous challenges we still face, but I promise you we will not stop with this report. We will continue asking questions, demanding answers, and fixing our national security system. We will not and must not fail in this endeavor. The terrorists did not win on September 11th, and our Nation -- firmly rooted in the ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice -- will persevere.

We will not forget those who we lost both on September 11th and subsequently in our war against terrorism. Nothing can erase their loss, and it is up to each of us to help their families and friends carry forward the memories of their loved ones.
May God bless each of you and your families, and may God bless America.
