Congresswoman Johnson Encourages African American Students to Apply for Available scholarships

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, August 22, 2006) - Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson urges students and parents of eligible college prospects to apply for available scholarships.

A large amount of scholarship money that has been set aside by companies for deserving students are either collecting dust or being returned to businesses because of a lack of interest.

"In just a few weeks, college campuses across the state will open their doors to thousands of new and returning students. In return, those students will have to open their wallets a little bit wider. While federal aid is most common, some campus administrators feel that students should also look elsewhere for extra help with college costs," Congresswoman Johnson said. "The number of students who take the time and energy to apply is minimal to the amount of need that's out there. A lot of students assume they're not going to be eligible, so they don't bother. But there are scholarships that look at many different factors, not just financial need."

Congresswoman Johnson said there were "many, many students" in the Dallas area who deserve the extra money, and scholarship deadlines don't always occur before the semester begins.
