STATEMENT OF CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON ON THE COST OF WAR IN IRAQ

Washington, D.C. (Thursday, July 20, 2006) - Today, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson issued the following statement on the cost of war:

"No question before Congress requires a more measured and thoughtful discussion than matters of war and peace. Our national security and the lives of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines depend on our ability to fulfill our Congressional responsibilities with dignity and respect."

This war has cost the lives of more than 2,500 brave American soldiers. 20,000 have been injured in the line of duty.

We must provide adequate resources and support for our troops; particularly during a time of war. It is part of our duty and responsibilities as a Member of Congress.

Continued participation in this perpetual war continues to cost us the lives of our military and the ability to fund our domestic priorities.

Recently released reports indicate that we are spending $8 billion a month in Iraq. That equates to $2 billion dollars a week, $267 million dollars a day, and $11 million dollars an hour."

The following tables quantify how war funding has degraded our domestic agenda
