Senator Coburn Statement On Defense Secretary Rumsfeld

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) released the following statement today regarding an amendment to the Defense Department appropriations bill concerning Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld:

"To withdraw from Iraq now would only serve to deliver terrorists a great victory and undermine our ability to prevail in the war on Islamofascism. We cannot waiver in our support of this effort because to do so would send an enduring message to our enemies that America is weak.

"The Secretary of Defense serves at the pleasure of the president and this President, rightly so in my opinion, has kept Secretary Rumsfeld on the job because of his exemplary service. Secretary Rumsfeld has served admirably and provided strong, steady and innovative leadership at the Defense Department during one of the most trying periods in the history of our nation."
