Cardin Outlines Education Plan; Earns Endorsement of Baltimore County Executive

On the first day of school in Baltimore County, Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) outlined his plan to improve America's education system while touring two county schools with County Executive Jim Smith. Following the school tours, Executive Smith announced his endorsement of Rep. Cardin in the U.S. Senate race, specifically citing the Congressman's commitment to public education and his record of getting real results to help Baltimore County families.

"I believe every child in Maryland deserves a safe learning environment, good teachers and an equal opportunity to succeed," said Rep. Cardin. "Here in Maryland, we have some of the best schools in the nation and also some of the most challenged. We must close the education gap that exists today in Maryland and across the nation. We can start by putting our best teachers where they are most needed, helping families afford college and by keeping our promises to fund important educational programs."

The Congressman toured Reisterstown Elementary School and Windsor Mill Middle School with County Executive Jim Smith. The County Executive then officially endorsed Rep. Cardin in the U.S. Senate race.

"Ben Cardin takes the time to understand the issues local schools face, and he knows what the federal government can do, and what it should leave to individual communities," said Executive Smith. "Ben's commitment to education, and his ability to get results, has made Baltimore County's communities stronger, and that is why we need him in the United States Senate.

"Ben Cardin has been an effective leader in Congress, and I am proud to endorse him for the Senate."

As Maryland's next U.S. Senator, Ben will work to make sure that the federal government does its part by: helping to bring the best teachers to the schools where they are most needed, making college more affordable, repairing our schools, standing up for our teachers' needs, and fulfilling its promises to fund important educational programs for our children.

In June, Rep. Cardin was endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT -- Maryland). He has consistently received high ratings from education groups. In 2005, he received an "A" rating from the National Education Association and the AFT gave his voting record a 100% for the 108th Congress.
