The St. Louis Post- Dispatch - Voters Guide Questions

Voters Guide Questions

PRIORITIES:

The United State Senate seat I'm running for this year is the same seat held by our own Harry Truman many years ago. Harry Truman was known for his tell-it-like-it-is spirit and commitment to holding our own government accountable to the people they serve. As a fourth generation Missourian, I plan to bring my straight-talking, independent style to Washington to ask the tough questions about the $9 trillion debt, legislation being written by special interests and taxpayer money being wasted on questionable contracts related to Iraq and Hurricane Katrina.
On May 8 this year, I gave a national security address where I unveiled my plan to restore a Truman Commission based on the committee Harry Truman established to investigate wartime spending. I believe we need a new Truman Committee. I believe we need more accountability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

I was born and raised in rural Missouri. I learned the small town values that have shaped my life from my father, who after serving his county in World War II returned home to run my family's feed mill, and from my mother, who after raising my two sisters, brother and me, went on to be the first female city councilwoman of Columbia.
After serving as state representative, I was elected as Jackson County's first female prosecutor where I worked to bring down the crime rate by 45%. As Jackson County prosecutor, I instituted some of the nation's first drug courts. And, while raising three children as a single mom, I earned the acclaim as Missouri's toughest, most aggressive state auditor in our history.
I believe my auditor skills are sorely needed now in Washington D.C. as our government has become out of touch with the needs of everyday Missourians
