Reps. Green, Sensenbrenner Say State Elections Board Decision Too Little, Too Late

U.S. Reps. Mark Green (R-Green Bay) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) issued the following statements Wednesday after the Wisconsin State Elections Board (SEB) ruled that individuals who wish to vote in Wisconsin must register using their driver's license number or cast a provisional ballot.

"It is really unfortunate that it took the threat of a federal lawsuit and legislative action to come to this point," Green said. " However, while I am pleased the SEB has finally realized they are wrong on this issue and have taken a step in the right direction, I am concerned that this rule doesn't go far enough to meet voter registration requirements under the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA). This rule remains unclear and in order to facilitate the integrity of elections in Wisconsin, the SEB should simply comply with HAVA and require a driver's license number without the provisional ballot exception."

"Finally, the State Elections Board is beginning to see the light," said Sensenbrenner. "Today's decision, though still not fully complicit with federal law, provides Wisconsinites with hope that the SEB might finally be getting it. It's certainly taken the board long enough to pull its head out of the sand, and I hope it continues down this path to eventual compliance with HAVA."
