Statement from Governor Jennifer M. Granholm on Presidential Veto of Stem Cell Research Bill

July 19, 2006

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement regarding President Bush's veto of the Stem Cell Research Bill:

"I am extremely disappointed that the White House has, once again, turned its back on the American people. Millions of people who face disabilities and disease would have benefited from this legislation, and I had hoped that the President would have listened to those in his own party, like Nancy Reagan, who know what a difference this research can make in people's lives."

In a letter to President Bush sent Monday, Governor Granholm called on the President to join with a growing number of families, education leaders, and scientists who support easing federal restrictions on stem cell research.
