RICHMOND — Governor Mark R. Warner today issued the following statement on the guilty plea and resignation today of Gary Thomson, Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, for aiding and abetting the unauthorized publication of a wire communication of a phone call in which the Governor was a party.

"I'm sure everyone who plays by the rules in politics is disappointed that this illegal behavior reached into the highest levels of the Republican Party in Virginia.

"It is remarkable that this has taken more than 16 months to come to light. Mr. Matricardi's role has long been known. Without interfering in this criminal investigation, why were other top Republican officials not trying to get to the bottom of Mr. Thomson's role?

"It is my hope that this is the last of these revelations."
