Tiberi Proposal to Help Veterans Get Federal Jobs Now in Effect

New rules proposed by Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-Delaware County) are now in effect, giving more military veterans hiring preferences for federal jobs.

Tiberi says federal officials began implementing the new rules, approved as part of the 2006 defense bill, last month.

"Normally, the government will publish regulations, allow several months for public comment, then make a final decision on implementing them," said Tiberi. "In this case, officials correctly expedited the process. They put the new federal preference rules into effect immediately when they announced them on June 9, although public comment is still being sought."

Under Tiberi's language, any honorably discharged veteran who served more than 180 consecutive days on active duty, any part of which occurred after September 11, 2001, would receive preference when seeking a U.S. government job. Generally, veterans' preference moves men and women who have served in the military to the front of the line when they seek a U.S. government job.

"Although it applies across the armed services, these new rules should be particularly helpful to members of the National Guard and Reserve who served in the War on Terror, but previously may not have qualified for hiring preference," said Tiberi.

The issue was brought to Tiberi's attention by reservists from Central Ohio who had served in the War on Terror, but were not eligible for the hiring preference.
