Lee Harris Reacts To The President's State Of The Union Address

Immediate Release

MEMPHIS - Lee Harris, Democratic Candidate for Congress, responds to President Bush's State of the Union Address. "Like Virginia Governor Tim Kaine said in the Democratic response to Bush's address, the federal government should serve the American people, all of us. Unfortunately, this past year, the Bush administration has decided to sacrifice the civil liberties of some under the guise of national security and helped pass an expensive prescription drug benefit that benefit big drug companies and confuse seniors."

Additionally, Harris believes that the rising costs for health insurance are one of the major hurdles facing the Ninth District. "Instead of proposing to shore up Medicaid shortfalls and commit to providing healthcare options for our more vulnerable and working class families, the Bush administration has proposed even further cuts in federal spending for Medicaid. One result of those cuts is that folks in Tennessee and Shelby County will lose coverage."

Finally, Lee Harris is concerned with the President's lack of commitment to working families. "It's time to raise the minimum wage. Tonight the Bush Administration laid out no strategy to raise the standards of survival for working families in the Ninth District or anywhere in the country for that matter."

Lee Harris grew up in Whitehaven in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the son of public school teachers and a proud product of Memphis' public schools. He went on to graduate from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and Yale Law School in New Haven, CT.

Lee is now a member of the faculty at the University of Memphis-School of Law, where he teaches Contracts and Poverty Law.
