Chocola Votes to Protect Traditional Marriage H.J. Res. 88 receives bi-partisan support in the House

Today Congressman Chris Chocola reaffirmed his support for traditional marriage by voting to amend the Constitution to protect one of our most sacred institutions.

"Marriage is under attack by activist judges and liberal interest groups," said Chocola. "Today I voted to protect the citizens of the 2nd District from having marriage redefined by unelected and unaccountable judges."

The amendment states: Marriage in the United States shall consist solely of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.

The Marriage Protection Amendment was introduced by Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) and has 131 bi-partisan co-sponsors. The bill text is drafted to ensure that the democratic process at the state level will decide the allocation of the benefits and privileges traditionally associated with marriage, not unelected activist judges.

Because this legislation would amend the Constitution, it requires more than a simple majority of the House to pass; it requires two-thirds of the votes.

"For those that claim to support traditional marriage, this vote was their only opportunity to put actions behind their words," commented Chocola.
