Bob Corker Calls Senate Vote To Protect Pork "Outrageous"

Senate votes 49 - 48 to keep $700 million Mississippi rail project in emergency spending bill, defeats additional measure to cut spending

Chattanooga - Today, former Chattanooga Mayor and Republican Senate candidate Bob Corker repeated his call for the Senate to pass a pork free emergency spending bill and expressed outrage at the failed attempt to eliminate $700 million for a non emergency rail project in Mississippi.

"The emergency spending bill should be just that - it should include only necessary emergency spending for the War in Iraq and rebuilding related to Hurricane Katrina. For Congress to include pork projects during this time of record debt is outrageous and irresponsible," said Bob Corker.

Yesterday, the Senate defeated a measure introduced by Senator Tom Coburn, by a 49 to 48 vote, to kill the $700 million project to relocate a recently rebuilt rail line. The Senate also defeated an effort supported by Senator Frist to cut the spending bill back to the President's original request level by 72 to 26 votes.

"Too many in the Congress just don't recognize that spending is out of control. In the Senate, voters can trust that I will stand with other conservatives who continue to fight this wasteful approach to spending our tax dollars," continued Corker.
