Gubernatorial Candidate Robin Jennison Addresses Supporters In Emporia
EmporiaGubernatorial candidate and former Speaker of the House Robin Jennison visited Emporia today, and spoke to supporters about a range of issues facing Kansas.
"In the last few weeks, we have seen what has happened when the judiciary does not respect the boundaries set forth in the constitution. All across the country, we are seeing the courts expand their powers from interpreting the law to creating new law, and that is unacceptable," Jennison said.
Jennison was born and raised in Healy, Kansas and attended Fort Hays State University, and worked on the family ranch in Healy until he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1990. During his term in the legislature Jennison chaired the House Appropriations Committee, served as House Majority Leader and Speaker of the House. After his time in the legislature, Jennison started Kansas Outdoors, an outdoor recreation and tourism company. Jennison and his wife, Coleen, split their time between the ranch in Healy and Topeka.
"I was born and raised in rural Kansas, and I know how important rural Kansas is to the future of this state. In the past, we've had an economic development strategy that consisted of stealing business from other states by creating ad hoc tax incentives. When the tax incentives run out, the businesses leave because they have no loyalty to Kansas," Jennison said. "Entrepreneurs and local businesses are the key to rural economic development, not out of state business. Our current economic development strategy punishes our local businesses by overtaxing them while at the same time giving unfair tax breaks to lure in out of state competitors. These out of state entities usually only stay long enough to bankrupt local businesses, force entrepreneurs out of the market, and then hold the local communities hostage by threatening to abandon them in favor of a sweeter deal in another city."
