SACRAMENTO - Assembly Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, of Bakersfield, today issued the following statement on the Assembly District Representation Committee's no-vote hearing on redistricting reform:

"It took three months for the Assembly's Democrat leadership to schedule a committee hearing on redistricting reform, and then they refused to allow the committee to vote on any of the proposed reforms.

"The people of California deserve real action, and they deserve reform to end the practice of back-room politicians drawing their own legislative districts.

"Governor Schwarzenegger called a special session of the Legislature three months ago to address redistricting, and my reform legislation, Assembly Constitutional Amendment 3X, was introduced at that same time.

"The Assembly District Representation Committee finally held a hearing on the subject today, but no action was taken on any bill. Not a single step was taken to reform a system that paved the way for every incumbent to be re-elected last year.

"The time for action is now. I will continue to work with Governor Schwarzenegger to restore voters' rights by putting non-partisan retired judges in charge of drawing district lines, and taking that power away from self-interested politicians."
