Why Is Lee Terry Running Back To Washington?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 6, 2006

Why is Lee Terry leaving Omaha when the President is coming to town? According to Rep. Terry's office, the Congressman will not be in town for the President¹s visit because of business in Washington.

"What business in Washington could be more important than an opportunity to talk directly to the President of the United States about an issue as critical as immigration?" said Democratic Congressional candidate, Jim Esch. "I can't imagine Lee Terry gets many chances to talk to the President directly. If anything, I would think Rep. Terry would want to try to lobby the President to see things from his point of view."

Esch stated, "I don't always agree with the President, but I respect his office, and I am willing to work with him to find solutions to the challenges that face us as a nation. To me, Lee Terry¹s reaction to the President's visit shows a lack of respect on the Congressman's part. How often do you get to represent the views of your district directly to the President of the United States? It seems like he is running off to Washington to avoid the situation. I hope that's not the case, but I can't imagine what is so pressing in DC that it couldn¹t wait a day. I hope to be at the President's talk tomorrow and if I get the opportunity, I will pledge to work with the President and members of both parties to find a comprehensive solution to immigration."
