KUHL HAILS THE DEATH OF THE PHONE TAX

U.S. Rep. John R. "Randy" Kuhl, Jr. (R-Hammondsport) today praised the U.S. Treasury Department's decision that it is conceding the legal dispute over the federal excise tax on long-distance telephone service. The Department of Justice will no longer pursue litigation and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will issue refunds of tax on long-distance service for the past three years. Taxpayers will be able to apply for refunds on their 2006 tax forms, to be filed in 2007.

"This is a victory for the American taxpayer and those of us who constantly push for sound tax policy and fiscal discipline," said Rep. Kuhl. "This issue was first raised to me by constituents at several of my town meetings, and I agreed then that elimination of this antiquated tax was important and necessary. I applaud the Treasury Department for this timely action. Now, Congress must act to get rid of the tax on local service, as well."
