Rhode Island Association of Realtors Report Exposes Huge Tax Burden on Cranston Home Owners

An independent report released by the Rhode Island Association of Realtors demonstrates once again that Steve Laffey's tax and spend record has left Cranston homeowners struggling under some of the highest property tax increases.

The Realtors' report ranks all of Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns in terms of monthly mortgage costs for buyers of median priced housing. It shows that Cranston residents pay a disproportionate share of property taxes, with Cranston ranking tops in terms of property taxes paid as a percentage of monthly mortgage costs for buyers of median-priced housing. 37.3% of Cranston residents' mortgage payments go towards paying property taxes, roughly $37.30 of every $100 paid towards a Cranston resident's mortgage goes towards property taxes. In contrast, residents in sister cities, Warwick and Providence pay 26.1 and 25.6% respectively.

As Mayor of Cranston, Steve Laffey raised both taxes and municipal spending by 20% and left Cranston residents struggling with one of the highest tax burdens in the state.

"Yet another report by an independent group shows that the citizens of Cranston are severely overtaxed," said Ian Lang, Chafee Campaign Manager. "The irony, of course, is that ever since Steve Laffey got the endorsement of the extremist Club for Growth, he's stated he opposes all tax increases. But as Cranston homeowners know, when it comes to Steve Laffey, watch what he does, not what he says."
