CONGRESSMAN HENRY CUELLAR FACILITATES TEXAS SPACE GRANT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY

Washington, DC- Congressman Henry Cuellar recently facilitated Texas State University's participation in the Texas Space Grant Consortium (TSGC) program. Wallace Fowler, TSGC Director said, "As a result of Congressman Cuellar's contact, Texas State University applied for membership in TSGC in mid-April and membership was approved at the TSGC Board of Directors meeting on April 24, 2006. We are grateful for Congressman Cuellar's many efforts and support."

The Texas Space Grant Consortium (TSGC) provides educational opportunities in the form of research, scholarships, and grants for students who embark on scientific and space related studies. The TSGC joins Texas universities, industry, schools, non-profit organizations, and governments together in a partnership that provides direct educational, technological, and collaborative benefits to participating institutions - now including Texas State University.

Since 1989, the TSGC has been extremely active in the higher education and research fields. The Consortium has fostered development of multi-institutional space research efforts, promoted high-quality graduate-level space research at consortium academic institutions, sponsored design competitions for space research and technologies, and provided opportunities for fellowships and scholarships.

Since 2004, there have been 22 Texas Space Grant activities in the 28th Congressional District alone. Congressman Cuellar added, "It is my hope that we can continue to work together to make sure that our students have every available resource. This goal is only furthered by the participation and existence of programs such as the Texas Space Grant Consortium in our local universities."

The Texas Space Grant Consortium continues to seek new Texas institutions as partners and to make the benefits of membership available to additional students and researchers. With the expansion to new colleges and universities, the TSGC offers scholarships, extended design challenges, involve new academic affiliates and outside collaborators, bring undergraduates together with graduate students in space-related research, and increase the diversity of participants.
Congressman Cuellar noted, "Texas State University's participation in the Texas Space Grant Consortium will provide numerous significant opportunities for the students and I am gratified that they have decided to become a part of such a forward thinking and successful organization."

Congressman Henry Cuellar is a member of the House Budget and Agriculture Committees in the 109th Congress; accessibility to constituents, education, health care and economic development are his priorities.
